Chapter 11. Trojan Mammoth

Murphy’s Law is perhaps the most universal law out there.

We managed to cover about two miles on the slope of The Gray Peak, accompanied by the two-headed giant, without being confronted by any players. Along the way, we ran into a large Wolverine and a couple of groups of mountain Dreks. So, I trained in handling the staff and finally increased my Strength to 110.

We arrived at the agreed place on time. We did not have to wait for Doc—he, Sting, and Daniel got there before us and were already preparing the cart, unloading some bales and barrels from it. The cart was so sturdy and large that it could fit two DrakenBolts. In our case, we were able to fit one giant and disguise him with all sorts of things.

The problems started when we least expected them.

The NPC-driver was a lanky fellow with a big nose, named Maurice. As soon as he saw our passenger, he began to panic and started to squeal so loud that we had to put him down. But what was worse is that the horses turned out even more sensitive, and when the ogre approached, they neighed hysterically, went up on their hind legs, and almost broke the shafts, trying to escape. It took all of us to restrain them. At the same time, we learned that horses can actually bite very painfully.

As horse neighing echoed far around, a few newbies, who were on a quest in the area surrounding the Sarin Crypt, came running to see what was going on. That was their mistake. Curiosity is no vice, but in this case, it was severely punished. We didn’t need any extra witnesses.

Then Maurice came back to his senses—like any NPC, he was immortal, so he quickly came back to life. Seeing the ogre trying to nestle in the cart, the poor fellow threw a tantrum again. He did not succumb to any persuasion, so I used my own staff to get him on the head. The guys tied his hands and feet, put a gag in his mouth, and laid him on the bottom of the cart, next to the ogre, covered with some rags.

While tinkering with the NPC, the calmed horses hoisted again and dashed off, almost turning the cart over. Then Bers finally lost his patience and took out the axes. Daniel stood up for the poor animals and the two men got into a serious fight. So serious, that we all got scared that one of them might end up at the Menhir. Meanwhile, the rest had to hold the horses, but the four of us weren’t strong enough for that, all the more so as Strength wasn’t Doc’s, Kata’s, or my strong side. Then Doc accidentally clipped some belts in the harness, and the horses broke free.

Ultimately, when we got to the Humpback Bridge, the local NPC guards were faced with the oddest transport that they’ve seen in the history of their short lives.

We had to hastily attach to the cart elongated shafts of sanded poles as thick as an arm.
